This is a another piece I did for drawing class, featuring the Hamburglar and Zorro. The theme this week was "pop art".
Anyhow, this is basically a social commentary piece. Its message lies in the relationship between the things each character represents and the situation that's taking place. Zorro, as you might know, is a romantic hero known for his commitment to the people and the fight against corruption...his character is both cunning, and complex. On the other hand, the Hamburglar is more or less part of an advertisment ploy...a simple, sensation-inspired commercial character created to represent McDonalds, which, in turn, represents consumerism and consumer culture in general. By having the Hamburglar trump Zorro with a plastic knife...and replace the well known "Z" insignia with the "M" of the golden arches, it's kind of a comment on how we've come to lose our values, our intellegence, our diligence, and maybe even our identities to the conveniences and "fun" of consumer and popular culture. And of course...the "lol" and "wtf?" are there to reverberate the same idea... in case you were wondering. It's also a comment on the increasing disregard Americans have for literacy...sad sad sad... I chose the Hamburglar as I felt that McDonalds related well to the pop culture theme as it is, for better or for worse, a large part of American pop culture. And...coincidentally, his costume happens to be somewhat similar to Zorro's, which I felt would make for an interesting composition... Anyhow...I tried to make this a smart piece that brings forward some interesting ideas...I dunno...I've always been particularly interested in exploring the way things like the media influence our culture and our identities, and how, at the same time, our culture influences the media. I like how this turned out...even though the picture is not so hot, it looks much better in real life...In the actual drawing, the entire background is done in graphite...with a crosshatched texture...which did not come through very well in the photo. Doh. The composition is slightly altered due to cropping, but I tried to make it so that it still worked. Ok. I'll stop blabbering now. I need to get myself a professional shutter-upper who will slap me for every word I type after I reach 200 words. But, knowing me...I'll probably just be like, "Must ow keep ow typi- ow" and I will be very angry that my professional shutter upper slapped me for that last one as I didn't even get to finish the word, not fair. I should probably go to the library right now...I have some research that needs starting...but...it's awfully gloomy outside today...so, I blame the weather for my laziness and my subsequent F. Oh, and just so you know...it really pained me to humiliate Zorro like this...he's one of my favorite characters, and to make him loose to such a fugly fucktard like the Hamburglar just kills me...masochism is amok..."Et tu, myself?" Here is a photo of the drawing in its natural habitat... [link] |

Almira Gulch! Just because you own half the county doesn't mean you have the power to run the rest of us. For twenty-three years, I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you. And now, well, being a Christian woman, I can't say it.
